VISTABEL (Formerly BOTOX)

WHAT IS VISTABEL? A natural purified protein that relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles, creating a smoothed, rejuvenated appearance. When it is injected into the muscle it temporarily blocks the chemical signals that make the muscles contract. Only minute quantities are injected and only the injected muscle will be affected.

WHY IS IT CALLED VISTABEL, INSTEAD OF BOTOX? Vistabel is the brand name approved in the UK for treatment. Injectors may sometimes use the name BOTOX when they are discussing treatment with Vistabel because the two products contain exactly the same active ingredient and are supplied by the same company.

IS IT SAFE? Vistabel/Botox has an excellent safety record and has been used in a variety of theraputic areas. It is one of the few treatments that can be given to treat children over the age of two for cerabral palsy - BOTOX helps them to walk. It has been used actively for over 10 years in thousands of patients worlwide.

WILL I LOOK NATURAL? The look that VISTABEL creates is down to the injector and your personal choice. We aim to make you look very nartural just without the lines. We do this by tailor making the dosage to suit your needs.

WILL MY LINES LOOK WORSE IF I DO NOT CONTINUE TREATMENT? Should you discontinue treatment, your lines will gradually revert to their original pre-treatment appearance.

HOW LONG DO TREATMENTS LAST? The majority of clients will need sessions at 3-4 monthly intervals during their first year, thereafter the treatments may become less frequent although this varies from person to person.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS? If they do occur they are temporary. The most common side effect is bruising from the injection although this seldom happens.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VISTABEL AND FILLERS? Frown lines are caused by overactive facial muscles whereas fillers correct the wrinkle by added volume around the muscle with intra-dermal injections. VISTABEL is injected intramuscular blocking the chemicals that cause the facial muscles to contract, thereby relaxing them.

DERMAL FILLERS

WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS? With age skin naturally starts to lose its elasticity as the collagen in the body starts to diminish. Injecting dermal fillers replaces the volume lost with age by plumping it up and making it firmer. This smoothes out fine lines and wrinkles, as well as rehydrating the skin from within. There are many types of fillers available on the market but we use Teosyl.

WHAT IS TEOSYAL? The Teosyal range consists of 3 monophasic, hyaluronic acid based products of non-animal origin, which are highly biocompatible, offering patients immediate and long-lasting results with no preliminary testing.

WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF HYALURONIC ACID? Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the skin and is used to retain & preserve moisture levels. With age it naturally diminishes and as a result the skin dries out and becomes wrinkled. Teosyal replaces the hyaluronic acid that has been lost and as it plumps the skin it also re-hydrates.

HOW DOES THE TREATMENT WORK? Teosyal is injected directly into the wrinkle plumping and lifting it out instantly. As volume is replaced the lines are eradicated and the skin's texture and tone redefined.

IS IT SAFE? Thanks to the manufacturing process, which benefits from the latest technological advances, the hyaluronic acid contained in Teosyal gels is extremely pure. This guarantees exceptional tolerance and perfect integration into skin tissues.

CHEMICAL PEELING

WHY HAVE A CHEMICAL PEEL? Chemical peels are used on skins which are sun damaged, wrinkled, blemished, acne scarred or blotchy. They can revert the skin to its original youthful state creating a more evenly toned and textured appearance. Skin will look tighter and more youthful than before but it is important to note that chemical peels cannot remove all facial flaws. Deeper lines, wrinkles and other flaws may require a course of peels or indeed subsequent treatments.

WHAT CHEMICALS ARE USED IN THE PEEL? The chemicals used are Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Lactic and Alpha Hydroxy Acids or Trichloracetic Acid (TCA) for more superficial peels or Phenol, for deeper chemical peels. These peels can be used on the face, neck, chest, back, arms or hands (basically anywhere you wish to rejuvinate or improve your skin tone).

WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF A SUPERFICIAL PEEL? Cosmedoctor offers two superficial peels. A Milk Peel and a Mask Peel.

The Milk Peel is used for clients who have a dull complexion & wrinkles - require epidermal stimulation and which for the appearance of their skin to be softer and smoother.

The Mask Peel is used for greasy acne prone skin, clients with visible pores, excess sebum and need dermalogical cleansing. These peels are the lightest of all peels and can be performed easily. The acid is used to remove only the outer layer of the skin to smooth out its texture.

The treatment usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes, but the doctor may vary the concentration of the chemical solution or the length of time of the treatment. After the procedure you will be given home care to use and usually a course is recommended at monthly or weekly intervals to achieve desired results.

IS THERE ANY 'DOWN-TIME' WITH SUPERFICIAL PEELS? With superficial peels there will be slight peeling but you will be able to go about your daily routine with no interruption.

WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF A MEDIUM PEEL? We offer two medium depth peels, the Spot Peel and the Cosmo Peel.

The Cosmo Peel is used for aging skins with either a smokers complexion, dark spots and wrinkles or stretch marks.

The Spot Peel is used for pigmentation spots, pregnancy dark spots, melesma and post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Full-face TCA peels take approximately 15 minutes. TCA peels do not require anaesthesia because the solution itself has a numbing effect on the skin. These peels usually require a course spaced out over weeks or months to achieve the best results.

IS THERE ANY 'DOWN-TIME' WITH MEDIUM DEPTH PEELS? Redness and skin irritation occurs for a1-3 days after each peel and gentle peeling could continue for up to 2 weeks.

DEEP PEELS. Our deep peel is used on clients with deeper lines, wrinkles, pigmentation problems, acne scarring and clients who want a total freshening up of the skin.

Full-face peelstake approximately 15 minutes. This peel does not require anaesthesia because the solution itself has a numbing effect on the skin. The peel is a one-off as it is a higher strength.

IS THERE ANY 'DOWN-TIME' WITH DEEP PEELS? The downtime lasts for a week to ten days and clients would need to be off work as peeling can be severe.

SCLEROTHERAPY (Leg Thread Vein Removal)

Leg thread veins differ from facial thread veins in both character and cause and therefore must be treated by different methods. Whilst the cause of Leg thread veins is not entirely known they are commonly run in families and are found more frequently in woman then men. There is no proven method of preventing their appearance although wearing support stockings, maintaining a normal weight and regular excercise may help to prevent dilated vessels from developing. In addition it is thought that high heeled shoes and standing for prolonged periods may add to the condition.

HOW DOES SCLEROTHERAPY WORK? A very fine needle is used to inject a solution into the vein, which irritates the lining of the vessel causing it to swell and stick together. Over a course of treatments some veins will fade from view eventually becoming barely or not at all visible.

A treatment session takes approximately 30-40 minutes. The number of treatment sessions depends on how many areas need to be treated, but we generally recommend on average 4 treatments. The solutions used vary somewhat with the size of the vessel to be injected, and your doctor will be able to decide which veins are best treated with which solutions. Larger varicose veins often underlie spider veins. In such cases it is thought that it is best to treat these vessels first.

ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS TO SCLEROTHERAPY? There are a number of possible side effects. These include various skin markings or injury, localised swelling and bruising or tenderness or itch. Occasionally a darkening of the skin occurs which may take up to 12 months to resolve. Most of the side effects are minor, and confined to the area that has been treated. Your doctor will give you a more detailed explanation of all possible side effects before the commencement of your treatment.

WILL TREATED VEINS RECUR? The veins treated adequately be sclerotherapy will not recur, unless they are extremely large before treatment. However, the underlying weakness in the vein walls is not corrected, and therefore new vessels will possibly continue to appear at the same rate as before treatment.

WHAT DO I DO AFTER LEG VEIN TREATMENT? You will be required to wear a support or pressure garment for a period of time, usually a week. Failure to do this may compromise the effectiveness of the treatment, so the inconvienience of a leg bandage for a week should be factored in to the timing of your appointment. You should also be able to do regular walking after treatment, as this promotes the emptying of the leg veins, including the ones treated.
